How this magnet works

This is a coded (programmable) magnet. Instead of one plain north and south pole, its face is printed with many small magnetic regions — maxels, or magnetic pixels — in a designed pattern. That pattern is what gives it its behavior: where it grips, where it releases, and how it aligns. It is the same programmable-magnet technology pioneered as Polymagnet by Correlated Magnetics Research.
